Correcting the Record: What the Delhi Iron Pillar Actually Tells Us
A long-read on how a genuine metallurgical achievement gets flattened into a viral claim — and why the real story is more interesting.

The Delhi Iron Pillar is routinely described online as 'rust-proof', a claim that is both wrong and a disservice to the people who made it. The pillar does corrode. What makes it remarkable is how slowly, and why.
The mechanism, established by R. Balasubramaniam's work in the early 2000s, is a protective misawite layer formed by the unusually high phosphorus content of the iron — a consequence of the smelting process used, not of any lost secret.
This distinction matters. The viral version asks us to believe in inexplicable ancient genius. The actual version credits identifiable metallurgical skill, operating under known constraints, producing a measurable and reproducible result. The second story is the one worth teaching.
